Should I Repair or Replace My Furnace?

Should I Repair or Replace My Furnace?

The thought of shelling out a large sum of money to replace a furnace can be daunting. However, spending the money now can help you save money in the long run. This is especially true in the case of furnaces and air conditioners.

When properly maintained, a typical furnace lasts about 25 years. Unless your unit has faulty or damaged wiring or has been improperly installed your furnace should provide many years of good and effective use.

How do you know if a furnace needs to be replaced or repaired ?
There are three main reasons why you would need to replace a furnace:

1. It’s Inefficient and Very Old

If the home you live in was built in the 1960’s or earlier, you most likely have an old  boiler system or furnace and chances are high that your system will need an overhaul primarily to ensure that it is as energy efficient as possible.

2. Cost Effective Resources In Your Area

Find out which heating resource, gas or electricity, is the most cost effective in your area and use a heating system that utilizes that resource. If you are using an electric furnace in your home but gas is cheaper in your area it maybe worth it to replace that unit.

3. Heating Load

Heating load refers to the amount of energy required to maintain a comfortable and steady 65-degree temperature indoors. In order to find out what the heating load is for your current furnace, contact your utility company and ask them to perform an energy audit.

4. Do the Math

The newer energy efficient furnaces of today can cut your heating bill by 20%.  If you have an older unit or a broiler in your home consider the simple equation listed below to help you decide wheter or not replacing your furnace would be worth the money

Add up your fuel bills for last winter.
Multiply that sum by 20%.
Divide that figure into the cost of buying and installing a new system which is typically around $3,000.

This simple equation will tell you how many years it will take to experience a return on your investment of a new energy efficient furnace.

If you truly suspect that your furnace needs to be replaced have a NATE certified HVAC Contractors take a look. Just as you would see a doctor to confirm a self diagnosed suspicion, you should do the same for your HVAC unit before making a definitive decision.

If you feel your furnace is still in good working order and sufficient for your current needs, then below are some simple repairs and changes you can implement to help your furnace run more efficiently, save you money and extend the life of your HVAC Unit

  • changing your furnace filter regularly
  • making sure your humidifier is set properly
  • replace your pilot light with an electronic ignition
  • sealing joints in your duct work

If you find that despite your efforts your furnace continues to work inefficiently, you probably need a new furnace.
